Seven Blogging Mistakes That Make You Look Dumb

We all know that blogging is a huge part of increasing the visibility of your business. It’s a way to show off your likable, personal side (I know you have one) while giving readers the information that they’ll need to make an informed decision.

Like anything else, there’s a right way and a wrong way to write a business blog. The seven mistakes below constitute the wrong way. They’ll make you look bad, and possibly cost you business.

1.Pick a boring headline—These short but sweet words are what every reader will use to determine whether to continue on. If you write a snoozer, don’t be surprised when your traffic reflects it. It’s the shortest part of your blog, but also the most important. So go read a good book on headlines. This one offers a great place to get started.
2.Upset the grammar police—They’re a nasty bunch, and a bigger group than you think. If your post is littered with the wrong usage of the word “your,” and common misspellings that display an open contempt for spell check, your credibility will take a nosedive.
3.Ramble on—While it makes for a great Led Zeppelin song, it’s not something you should be doing. Enter. Make your point. Get out. Don’t tell us unnecessary stories that have nothing to do with the point you’re trying to make. You’ll bore people.
4.Post infrequently—The whole point of this blogging thing is to maintain some consistent visibility in front of your audience. So here’s the thing, it’s got to be frequent, and it’s got to be good. That’s the only way your readers will look forward to your work. If you’re shopping around for someone’s services, and you see they haven’t blogged for six months, you’re going to wonder if they’re still in business.
5.Write with no personality—Your readers can get the same old industry tips in any given number of places. What do you actually think about them? What can you add and offer to the conversation? You’re going to come up in searches that produce thousands of results. The key is to stand out by being human.
6.Not take advantage of the platform’s tools—WordPress is the most popular blogging platform out there, and it offers a wide array of tools to put the word out there about your blog. So take advantage of SEO, social and RSS plugins that you can.
7.Write For Yourself—A blog is a tool to reach your audience with information that will have value to them. If you’re constantly plugging services and products, or constantly writing about yourself, it’s a turnoff. A blog really is about your readers, not you.
What mistakes can you think of that kill the impact of a blog?
